IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team was defeated by No. 16 Illinois, 1-0 Friday night at the Iowa Soccer Complex. Iowa finished the 2006 season with a 6-11-2 overall record and a 1-8-1 Big Ten mark.
Illinois took a 1-0 advantage in the 68th minute when Jessica Bayne scored on a cross from Ella Massar.
Iowa’s defense played strong the entire 90 minutes against a constant attacking Illinois offense that recorded 11 shots. The Hawkeyes struggled to gain possession in the second half until late in the match, but couldn’t find the equalizing goal.
Senior Ali Becker made three crucial stops in her final collegiate match at Iowa. Becker finished the season with three wins and four shutouts.
“I thought we defended really well tonight,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “We played very well against one of the classiest teams in the Big Ten.”
