Iowa Ranks High in ESPN Two-Sport List

Dec. 22, 2006

Friends of the University of Iowa and fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes have long prided themselves on the long-term success of the intercollegiate athletics program at the UI. ESPN.com’s Pat Forde uncovered additional evidence of that fact earlier this week when he reported that the Hawkeyes ranked 19th nationally in a review of what he termed the “top two-sport schools” in the country over the past five seasons.

The University of Iowa ranked 19th as a result of scoring 57 points: 14 points as a result of the national rankings of the Iowa football program paired with 43 points as a result of the same calculation done on the UI’s men’s basketball program.

Texas – Iowa’s opponent in the 2006 Alamo Bowl and the defending national champions – ranked No. 1 with 13 total points, four from its football program’s success and nine from its men’s basketball program.

Florida with 25 points and LSU with 25 – two teams the Hawkeye football team has defeated in the last three seasons – Florida in the 2004 Outback Bowl and LSU in the 2005 Capital One Bowl – rounded out the top three.
