This Week

The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team will travel to Minneapolis, Saturday to face Big Ten rival Minnesota. Competition will take place at the Sports Pavilion and begins at 6 p.m. Minnesota is currently ranked 26th while Iowa is ranked 21st.

Last Competition

The Hawkeyes hosted Oklahoma last week and lost (195.650-194.525). The total was Iowa’s second highest team score this season, and the Hawkeyes tied their season best score on floor exercise. Top performers for Iowa included freshman Katie Turcotte, who tied for first on vault, scoring a 9.875. She also placed third in the all-around with a 38.825. Junior Katie Burke earned a 38.6 fourth place finish in the all-around.

Iowa In Action

Iowa has posted several top scores this season. Freshmen Turcotte and Jenny Donar, and sophomore Jen Simbhudas, have Iowa’s top vault score at 9.9, while JunBurke holds Iowa’s top uneven bars score of 9.875. Burke also posted Iowa’s top beam performance (9.825). Simbhudas holds Iowa’s top floor score of 9.9, and sophomore Kara Pinjuv has Iowa’s top all-around score at 39.175.

Head Coach Larissa Libby

Iowa Head Coach Larissa Libby is in her third season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. In her first two years, Libby recorded a 12-31 overall record. Before becoming head coach, Libby was Iowa’s associate head coach for one year and an assistant coach for three seasons. While associate head coach, Libby led the GymHawks to a school record 49.425 beam performance in 2004. In addition, in 2004 the GymHawks recorded a 49.0 or higher seven times on beam under Libby’s guidance.

Next Competition

The Hawkeyes will host Southern Utah, March 2nd at 7 p.m., and Iowa State, March 4th at 2 p.m. Both meets will take place at the UI Fieldhouse and will be Iowa’s final home competitions of the season.
