Hawkeyes Stay Undefeated In Spring Season

April 3, 2007

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa soccer team continued to roll through its 2007 spring season with a win over Kansas and draws against Saint Louis and Marquette. The Hawkeyes are currently 3-0-3.

“We had some nice results over the weekend,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “We need to continue to stay focused and keep the positive results coming.”

Iowa played in a hard fought scoreless draw at Saint Louis on March 24. The Hawkeyes had a few scoring chances, including one by Jackie Kaeding that hit the crossbar, but couldn’t net the winning goal. Rainey, however, was happy with the result.

“It was a real back and forth game and we created some chances,” Rainey said. “We did some very good things against Saint Louis. They won their conference last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. I think the result showed how much we are improving.”

Iowa then traveled to Lawrence, KS, on March 31 for matches against Marquette and Kansas. The Hawkeyes defeated the Jayhawks, 1-0 with a goal by Kelsie Full and followed with a 1-1 draw against Marquette. Stephanie Hyink gave Iowa the lead against Marquette, but the Golden Eagles netted the equalizing goal late in the match.

“These were both good results for us,” Rainey said. “We played better against Kansas and made some good adjustments to get the win. We seemed to get stronger as the match moved along and it was good to get the win.”

“It was disappointing to give up the late goal against Marquette,” Rainey said. “Even with the result, we showed that we are getting better. Marquette advanced to the second of the NCAA Tournament and is a very good team.”

Iowa returns to action Saturday, April 14 vs. Minnesota. The match will be held in Des Moines and is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start.
