Hawkeyes Prepare For Final Big Ten Matches

THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team (7-11, 0-8) will conclude the regular season by traveling to West Lafayette, IN, Saturday to face Purdue and to Urbana, IL, Sunday to face Illinois. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday.

SCOUTING PURDUE — Purdue enters this weekend’s competition 8-11 overall and 1-7 in the Big Ten. The team recently suffered losses to Ohio State and Indiana. Freshman Branko Kuzmanovic (11-8) is playing in the No. 1 spot.

SCOUTING ILLINOIS — Illinois (14-7, 6-2) is ranked ninth in the most recent poll from College Tennis Online. Junior Kevin Anderson is ranked fifth in singles while junior Ryan Rowe is ranked 15th. The two players combine to form Illinois’ No. 1 doubles team. They are ranked 10th in doubles.

LAST TIME OUT — The Hawkeyes were defeated by Minnesota (4-3), Wisconsin (7-0), and Northwestern (5-2) last week. Freshman Tommy McGeorge was able to grab two singles wins and improve his record to 9-9. The No. 1 doubles team of juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie were 1-2 last week with a victory over Northwestern.

HEAD COACH Steve Houghton — Steve Houghton, the dean of Big Ten tennis coaches, is in his 26th season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Houghton has a career record of 284-297 (.489). His best season came in 1984 when Iowa won a school record 21 matches and two Hawkeyes earned all-Big Ten honors. Four of Houghton’s athletes have also been selected Big Ten Sportsman of the Year. He became the winningest coach in Iowa tennis history in 1992 and is a member of the Iowa Tennis Hall of Fame. While playing at Iowa, Houghton had a career winning percentage of .727 (40-15), the second best in Iowa History.
