IOWA CITY –
Future Hawkeye Laura Cilek of Iowa City West High School carded a 76 Wednesday in the second round of the Class 4A state girls’ golf meet which tied Linn-Mar’s Amanda Stahl, another Iowa recruit, with 146 total. Cilek won the 4A title by virtue of her of lower second-round score.
This year was the second year in which both recruits qualified for state. Cilek was unable to compete due to the flu in 2006, while Stahl’s performance was her second straight individual state runner-up title. Cilek’s win marked the first West High individual girls’ golf title in school history.
“I think their performances were great!” said Iowa Coach Kelly Crawford. “The top two in the state tied and are going to be Hawkeyes next year, I am ecstatic. I went to the tournament and watched them compete and I can’t wait for next year.”
Stahl is a Marion, IA, native who earned first team all-state recognition in 2006 and was named the 2004 and 2006 Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year. Stahl is a three-time first team all-conference selection and was named her team’s MVP three-straight years. She was named the 2006 Iowa PGA Junior Golfer of the Year after winning eight high school tournaments her junior year. She also garnered first team all-Metro accolades her sophomore and junior campaigns. This last summer, she placed second at the Westfield Qualifier and third at the IPGA Mid-Summer Classic.
The Iowa women’s golf team finished in the top ten in all five of its tournaments during the 2006 fall season and finished top ten in three of five in the spring in its first year under Crawford’s direction. Six of eight starters will return next season.
