24 Hawkeyes to Watch
The Big Ten Network: Nuts and Bolts
IOWA CITY – Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes have won Big Ten Conference championships in recent seasons with quarterbacks that – personality-wise – were, according to Iowa’s veteran head coach, on opposite ends of the spectrum.
Thursday during an interview with ESPN’s Reece Davis, Ferentz said He thinks sophomore quarterback Jake Christensen is somewhere between the Brad Banks – the quarterback of Iowa’s recent FedEx Orange Bowl team – and Drew Tate — the field general who guided Iowa to a Big Ten title and a victory over LSU in the 2005 Capital One Bowl — in terms of his personality and leadership style.
“Drew (Tate) was demonstrative. Brad (Banks) was very placid. (Jake) is probably right in the middle,” Ferentz said of the native of Lockport, Ill., and added that Christensen has done an excellent job of working with his teammates and clearly has the skills to be a very effective leader and college quarterback.
“We’re really excited about Jake. He’s a good thrower and we think he can be very similar to Drew in terms of what he brings to our offense,” Ferentz said.
