IOWA CITY, IA – For the third game in a row in this early season, Iowa played tough for 90 minutes, but in the end, the Hawkeyes left the Iowa Soccer Complex without a victory, falling 2-0 to #23 Missouri on Friday night.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Ron Rainey liked the effort that his Hawkeyes showed.

“I thought we played very hard tonight,” said Rainey. “We played with a lot of aggression defensively but not enough aggression on offense. This was the third straight quality opponent we played, but now we have to re-focus and get set for Iowa State on Sunday.”

Offensive scoring chances were few and far between for the Hawkeyes, who got off only four shots the whole game. Despite having the dominant edge in corner kicks (6-0), the Iowa offense couldn’t muster anything against a tough Missouri defense.

The Tigers got on the board in the 26th minute when Kristin Andrighetto put a shot just past Iowa goalkeeper Lindsey Boldt. The Iowa defense maintained until the 84th minute, when Krista Kruse got some separation and added to Missouri’s lead with her first goal of the season.

Two Iowa freshmen got their first collegiate starts, as forwards Keli McLaughlin and Amanda Martin joined defender Jenna Aleo in being the only three freshmen to make starts this season.

The Hawkeyes will look to rebound on Sunday when they face off against in-state rival Iowa State in the annual Cy-Hawk Series. Iowa defeated Iowa State last season 1-0 when then-junior Kelsie Full scored an overtime goal to win.
