IOWA CITY, IA – For the first three weeks of the season, Iowa had played to three draws, but the Hawkeyes got the result they’ve been waiting for Friday night – their first victory of the 2007 season. Junior Kelsey Shaw scored her – and Iowa’s – second goal of the season to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 victory over Drake.
In the 51st minute, sophomore Alexandria Seydel placed a perfect corner kick for a cutting Shaw, who headed the ball just past Drake goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder. Shaw’s goal would be all the Hawkeyes needed, as the defense once again clamped down to secure the win. Freshman Amanda Martin led the Hawkeyes with two shots, while seven other players recorded one shot a piece.
Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Boldt continued her fabulous play in goal, notching her third shutout in five matches this season. Boldt and the rest of the Iowa defense have allowed just three total goals the whole season.
“I liked our execution for 90 minutes,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “We were able to do a lot of good things with the ball in our possession tonight.”
The Iowa offense controlled the tempo for much of the match, constantly keeping the ball in the attacking third. When the Bulldogs turned up the heat offensively in the second period, the Hawkeyes answered, ruining several scoring chances and put thoughts of a Drake comeback to rest.
The Hawkeyes close out their four-match home stand on Tuesday as they host Northern Iowa. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the UI Soccer Complex.
