Hawkeyes To Compete At ITA Regional

THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team will travel to Minneapolis, MN, to compete in the ITA Regional beginning Thursday. The event will cover five days at the Baseline Tennis Center with play concluding Monday. The singles finalists and doubles champion will earn berths to compete in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships beginning November 1.

LAST TIME OUT– The Hawkeye men’s tennis team competed at the Purdue Fall Invitational in West Lafayette, IN. The Hawkeyes had a strong showing as they claimed 17 singles victories and seven doubles wins overall at the two-day tournament. Senior Bart von Monsjou won flight `A’ by overwhelming Branko Kuzmanovic of Purdue (6-2, 6-2) Sunday. Van Monsjou never lost a set during the tournament after defeating P.J. Rose of Purdue (6-1, 6-2) and Dusan Medan of Marquette (6-2, 6-1) Saturday. J.P. Ritchie claimed first place in flight `B’ after defeating Stephen Shao of Marquette (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) on the final day. Tommy McGeorge finished second in flight `C’ after falling to Eric Ramos of Purdue (6-4, 7-5 (5)). Additionally, Gregory Holm finished second in flight `D’ after falling to D.J. Johnson of Purdue (1-6, 6-2, 6-3) Sunday.

BIG TEN TOURNAMENT– The University of Iowa will be hosting this year’s Big Ten Tournament in April, 2008. The tournament will be held at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex (indoor) and the Klotz Outdoor Courts (outdoor).

HEAD COACH Steve Houghton — Steve Houghton, the dean of Big Ten tennis coaches, is in his 27th season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Houghton has a career record of 285-299 (.488). His best season came in 1984 when Iowa won a school record 21 matches and two Hawkeyes earned all-Big Ten honors. Four of Houghton’s athletes have also been selected Big Ten Sportsman of the Year. He became the winningest coach in Iowa tennis history in 1992 and is a member of the Iowa Tennis Hall of Fame. While playing at Iowa, Houghton had a career winning percentage of .727 (40-15), second best in Iowa history.
