MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa soccer team ended the season on a positive note Friday, downing Minnesota 1-0 and clinched their first Big Ten Tournament berth since 2001. Junior Stephanie Hyink scored only goal of the game for Hawkeyes, assisted by sophomore Alexandria Seydel.
After the match, Head Coach Ron Rainey could not have been more proud of his team.
“I’m extremely pleased with the way we competed tonight,” Iowa’s second-year coach said. “It was an all-around team effort and we are very excited to make the Big Ten postseason tournament.”
Playing without senior Lindsey Boldt and freshman Kali Feiereisel, freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Swanson stepped into action and made three saves for her first career shutout. Minnesota outshot the Hawkeyes 18-2, but Swanson and the Hawkeye defense repeatedly turned the Golden Gophers back.
The Hawkeyes finished the regular season with an 8-7-4 record, including a mark of 4-6-0 in conference play. The 2007 Big Ten Tournament kicks off Thursday in Minneapolis, MN.
