IOWA CITY, IA – Hawkeye freshman Stephanie Swanson was named Big Ten Conference co-Defensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Penn State goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. It is the first career honor for Swanson, and is the first Hawkeye to be named Player of the Week since Britta Vogele in 2002.
Due to a season-ending knee injury to senior Lindsey Boldt and the unavailability of freshman Kali Feiereisel, Swanson started the regular-season finale at Minnesota last Friday and corralled three saves to earn her first career shutout. The win clinched the Hawkeyes their first Big Ten Tournament berth since 2001.
“It’s a great honor for Stephanie,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “Any individual honor we receive is really a reflection on the team. It was a great team effort against Minnesota, and Stephanie had a big part in helping us get a win.”
The Hawkeyes kick off the Big Ten Tournament Thursday as they play top-seeded Penn State. Match time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Elisabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in Minneapolis, MN.
