ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team finished the fourth and final day of competition at the Big Ten Singles Championship. The completion of the tournament also marks the end of the fall season for the Hawkeyes. The semifinal and final round matches of the 64-player main draw were completed Monday at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Senior Bart van Monsjou was one of four remaining players left in today’s competition. Seventh-seeded van Monsjou defeated fifth-seeded N. Polley of Wisconsin 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the semifinals. In the finals, J. Jung of host Michigan beat van Monsjou 6-4, 7-6(6). Van Monsjou had advanced to the finals with five victories, including wins over the fourth and fifth-seeded players. This tournament marks the deepest a Hawkeye had advanced in the Big Ten Singles Championship since Tyler Cleveland won the event in 2000.
In the consolation bracket, Wisconsin’s Luke Rassow-Kantor got past Iowa’s Reinoud Haal 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. In the other semifinal match, Hawkeye J.P. Ritchie defeated Dominic Ozanne of Ohio State 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(4). Ritchie then lost to Rassow-Kantor in the finals 4-6, 7-6(7), 1-0(5) to finish second.
Head Coach Steve Houghton was happy with the results of the tournament.
“It was exciting to see three of the final eight players (Ritchie, Haal, van Monsjou) were Hawkeyes. It was great to see Bart (van Monsjou) finish second out of the top 64 players in the Big Ten Conference.”
