Blazek Named Honorary Captain

IOWA CITY – Former Iowa captain A.J. Blazek has been selected honorary captain for Saturday’s regular season finale against Western Michigan. The Hawkeyes face the Broncos in a televised game with kickoff set for 2:37 p.m. in Kinnick Stadium.

Blazek, a 6-2, 284-pound center, lettered in 1999 and 2000 (Kirk’s first two years at Iowa). Blazek was an honorable mention all-Big Ten pick and a two-time member of the Academic all-Big Ten unit. He served as Iowa’s co-captain in 2000.

Blazek is now in his third year with the Fort Hayes (KS) College football staff. He is the Tigers’ offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. He was a graduate assistant with the Hawkeye program (2001-05) and helped lead Iowa in four bowl games.

Blazek played in the Arena Football League for two years and earned the Walter Payton Award for community service in the Chicago area in 2001.

Blazek will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin-flip. He will also be with the Hawkeyes on the sidelines and in the locker room before and after the game.
