Ferentz has a storied history of developing 'sleepers'

Feb. 5, 2008

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The national college football signing day is Wednesday, Feb. 6, and the University of Iowa coaching staff has already secured more than 20 commitments. If UI head coach Kirk Ferentz’s past history is any indication, there will be at least one talented “sleeper” among the heralded recruits.

It wasn’t that long ago when Ferentz decided that toughness, smarts and speed were more important than a few inches, so he offered a scholarship to a little-known defensive back from Erie, Pa., named Bob Sanders. The rest, as they say, is history.

Bruce Feldman from ESPN The Magazine, named Sanders the best Division I sleeper recruit of the past decade.
