Hawkeyes Climb In The Rankings

March 5, 2008

IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team has risen to No. 47 in the ITA national rankings. The Hawkeyes were previously ranked No. 66.

The ranking shows what the team has achieved already this spring. The Hawkeyes have defeated two nationally ranked teams and one previously ranked team. Iowa defeated No. 31 Indiana (4-3) in Iowa City and won at No. 74 Western Michigan (4-3). In addition, the Hawkeyes defeated previously ranked Nebraska (5-2). Additionally, Iowa’s two losses have come at the hands of ranked teams (No. 37 Denver, No. 33 Drake).

“We are very pleased with our progress this year,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We feel that we can continue to climb in the rankings as our remaining schedule includes ten top nationally ranked teams.”

With a record of 6-2 overall, and 1-0 in Big Ten play, the Hawkeyes are looking forward to the rest of the season and first and foremost, a showdown with No. 2 Ohio State Friday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. Admission is free.
