Michigan advances to face Iowa on Friday

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The stage is set for a rubber match between the University of Iowa women’s basketball team and Michigan at the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Friday, March 7. Tip-off from Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., will be 10:30 a.m. CT.

Michigan earned another shot at the regular-season Big Ten Conference Champions after the Wolverines rallied in the second half to eliminate Penn State 64-54 on Thursday. Michigan was led by Krista Phillips with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Three other Wolverines scored in double figures — Carly Benson (13), Krista Clement (10) and Ashley Jones (10).

In the first meeting between Iowa and Michigan on Dec. 30 in Ann Arbor, the Hawkeyes held a 26-24 lead at halftime, only to fall 63-46. Krista VandeVenter paced Iowa with 14 points and nine rebounds. The Hawkeyes won the second game, 66-61, on Jan. 27 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Johanna Solverson scored 28 points and pulled down five rebounds. Kristi Smith and Wendy Ausdemore added 12 and 11 points. The trio of Solverson, Smith and Ausdemore combined to make 9 of 23 three-point field goals.

Iowa, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, is 20-9 overall. Michigan, the No. 7 seed, improved to 17-12.
