Iowa Falls To No. 14 Michigan, 5-2

ANN ARBOR, MI – The 46th-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to No. 14 Michigan Friday, 5-2. With the loss, the Hawkeyes are now 9-5 overall on the season and 1-2 in Big Ten play.

Michigan won the doubles point, claiming two of three matches. Iowa’s victory came as seniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie defeated the 20th-ranked doubles team in the nation. Ritchie/van Monsjou defeated No. 20 Maravic/Navas 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.

Iowa was able to claim two singles victories at the Varsity Tennis Center. Senior Bart van Monsjou continued his strong play at No. 1 singles, defeating No. 61 Matko Maravic 6-2, 6-2. In addition, Reinoud Haal defeated Peter Aarts 7-6(4), 2-6, 1-0(7), at No. 4 singles.

“We played one of the top teams in the country in a very close match,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.

The Hawkeyes play at Penn State Sunday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. CT.
