DES MOINES, IA – The University of Iowa men and women’s track teams resumed competition at the 99th annual Drake Relays, Friday. The men were highlighted by three outstanding performances in the shot put. Juniors John Hickey, A.J. Curtis and senior Shane Maier placed second, third and fourth respectively. Sophomore Rhonda-Kaye Trusty was a bright spot for the women as she set a career-best time of 11.90 in the 100 meters.
Curtis’ third place throw of 57-11 ¾ is the longest of his career, surpassing a mark of 57-10 ½ set last weekend at the Iowa Invitational. Maier’s toss of 56-4 is his best of the season by 16 inches. The 1,600-meter relay team (Steven Willey, Lee Elbert, Chris Barton and Ray Varner) advanced to the finals with a time of 3:11.11, their fastest this season. The 400-meter relay team composed of senior Max Milder, freshman Brandon McSkimming, seniors Aaron Reed and Elbert ran a season best time of 41.33, but missed qualifying for the finials by one place.
The women’s distance medley relay team placed seventh in a time of 12:03.66. Freshmen Lauren Hardesty, Amanda Hardesty and Tiffany Hendricks ran the first three legs of the relay while junior Krista Anderson was the anchor. Placing 12th was the 3,200-meter relay team of senior Monica Mims, freshman Bethany Praska, junior Jennie Docherty and sophomore Katie Ellis they finished with a time of 9:14.66.
“It was a cold, windy day at Drake,” Women’s Head Coach Layne Anderson said. “Definitely not the best condition, but athletes competed hard. Although it is hard to assess, I think we had some solid performances.”
Competition will resume at the Drake Relays, Saturday at 8 a.m.
