IOWA CITY, Iowa– University of Iowa defensive back Charles Godfrey was the 67th student-athlete selected in the 2008 NFL Draft. Godfrey was selected in the third round by the Carolina Panthers.
Godfrey is the first Iowa Hawkeye selected in this year’s draft, a selection that means the University of Iowa has had at least one student-athlete selected in 31 consecutive NFL Drafts.
Godfrey was named an honorable mention all-American by Pro Football Weekly and second team all-Big Ten after his senior season at the UI. A native of Baytown,Texas, who prepped at Robert E. Lee High School, Godfrey led Iowa with five interception in 2007. He also broke up nine passes and collected 65 tackles. He was routinely assigned the opposing team’s most dominant receiver.
He joins punter Jason Baker as the second University of Iowa graduate on the Panther roster.
