IOWA CITY — The UI Athletics Department will adopt current Big Ten Conference policy for the broadcast of instant replays of “controversial plays” at historic Kinnick Stadium beginning with the 2008 season opener Aug. 30 against Maine, the UI announced today.
Big Ten policy allows replays of game action on large scale video systems inside the league’s 11 football stadiums. The league’s policy on the broadcast of game action “where the official’s call could be considered a substantial part of the play” is a limit of one replay at 75 percent of real time.
The UI’s practice has been to not broadcast replays on “HawkVision” – the name given to the large scale video display systems inside historic Kinnick Stadium – of game action that could be considered “controversial” regardless of whether the decision was for or against the Hawkeyes.
The UI’s decision to adopt the current Big Ten policy was a multi-year process that culminated with a review of the feedback it received from a survey of season ticket holders it conducted earlier this year.
“We have reviewed our replay policy and the procedures that support it every year since the technology was installed in the stadium. This off-season, we provided interested season ticket holders the opportunity to provide input on a variety of topics related to game-days at Kinnick including our instant replay policy,” said Rick Klatt, the UI’s associate athletics director for external affairs.
Klatt said more than 94 percent of the more than 3,300 season ticket holders who completed their survey indicated a preference for the UI to adopt the Big Ten policy.
“One of our primary responsibilities as a host institution is to stage our events in an environment that encourages sportsmanship, respect for public and private property, respect for yourself, and respect for everyone from the visiting team and game officials, to the person sitting next to you in the grandstands. The UI takes that responsibility very seriously,” said Klatt.
“We are also charged with balancing that responsibility against providing the very best game environment possible for our patrons. We’re comfortable that this adjustment in our game-day procedures allows us to continue to meet our first and most important obligation while enhancing the game experience for the ticket buyer.”
Klatt said the feedback received from the survey was important to the decision-making.
“We knew our replay policy was a topic of discussion among our fans. The question really was how wide across the spectrum of fans – older, younger, general public, faculty, staff, student, contributor, non-contributor, etc. — was the desire. The survey provided the answer to that question,” said Klatt.
The UI Athletics Ticket Office is accepting orders for season tickets, three-game ticket packages, and single-game tickets to five of the seven home games to be played by the 2008 University of Iowa football team.
Single-game tickets will be available for Iowa’s home games against Maine (Aug. 30), Florida International (Sept. 6), Northwestern (Sept. 27), Penn State (Nov. 8) and Purdue (Nov. 15). Iowa’s games against Iowa State (Sept. 13) and Wisconsin (Oct. 18) are sold out.
Single-game tickets cost $50 for all five games. Discounted tickets priced at $25 and intended for use by boys and girls high school-aged and younger are also available for Iowa’s games against Maine and Florida International.

The UI Athletics Ticket Office is accepting ticket orders online at hawkeyesports.com. A limited number of season tickets and three-game ticket packages are available in addition to single-game tickets for five of Iowa’s seven home games in 2008.

Iowa will enter the 2008 season with a string of 30 consecutive sellouts. The 2008 Hawkeyes will play four of their first five games at home with all four games scheduled to kick off shortly after 11 a.m. (Iowa time). The first three games will be televised in high definition to a national audience by the Big Ten Network.
The Hawkeyes’ 2008 Homecoming game against Northwestern on Sept. 27 will also kick off shortly after 11 a.m. The source of the live television coverage of that event is yet to be announced. The start times and television sources for Iowa’s other three home games in 2008 are also yet to be determined.
