A four-year letterman (2002-05), Hinkel helped Iowa to Big Ten titles in 2002 and 2004. During his time as a Hawkeye, Iowa played in the Orange, Capital One and two Outback Bowls. He tied an Iowa bowl record with two touchdown receptions in the 2006 Outback Bowl.

Hinkel was named one of the team’s permanent captains following the 2004 and 2005 seasons. He ranks ninth on the Hawkeye career reception list with 135 and 14th in receiving yards with 1,588. He had 15 career touchdown receptions, plus two other touchdowns (one rushing and one punt return).

Hinkel will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin-flip. He will also be with the Hawkeyes on the sidelines and in the locker room before and after the game.
