MALIBU, CA – The University of Iowa soccer team fell to the Pepperdine Waves, 1-0, in overtime Friday, on the first day of the Nike Pepperdine Invitational. It was Iowa’s (2-2-0) first-ever match in the state of California.

“Pepperdine is a very good team and I think we played hard against them,” said Head Coach Ron Rainey. “We’ve got to be a little better with our possessions to help increase our scoring chances.”

The Hawkeye defense was tested throughout the match, with goalkeepers Kali Feiereisel and Emily Moran combining for eight saves. Despite being outshot 17-2, Iowa would not back down from Pepperdine’s (1-2-1) furious offensive attack. But three minutes into overtime, Pepperdine’s Amanda Rupp tapped a ball into the air from 12 yards out that got past Moran to give the Waves their first win of the season.

Senior Stephanie Hyink was one of six Hawkeyes returning to her home state for the first time and had one of Iowa’s two shots. Freshman Rachel Blakesley was credited with the other. Junior Jackie Kaeding, sophomore Alexandria Seydel and freshman Jenna Aleo played all 94 minutes of the match.

Iowa returns to action Sunday on the final day of the Nike Pepperdine Invitational, where they will play San Diego. Match time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (CT).

“We’ve got to have a quick recovery after this one,” said Rainey. “San Diego is a very good team and we’ll need to be at our best.”
