CEDAR FALLS, IA – The University of Iowa soccer team defeated Northern Iowa Friday night, 2-0, to snap a three-match losing streak. Senior forward Stephanie Hyink scored both of Iowa’s goals.
The weather was less than ideal, with rain coming down steadily throughout the match. Despite the wet conditions, Head Coach Ron Rainey was pleased with the way his team battled.
“It was good to see us play well in the rain and in difficult conditions,” said Rainey. “Our players stayed patient on the field and it led to some good scoring chances in the second half.”
Hyink, the native from Temecula, Calif., got Iowa on the board in the 60th minute, when she split the Northern Iowa defense and placed a shot that got past goalkeeper Lauren Potzman to make the score 1-0. And with 19 seconds left in the match, Hynik gave the Hawkeyes an insurance goal to push the lead to 2-0. Sophomores Keli McLaughlin and Jenna Aleo, as well as freshman Morgan Showalter, were all credited with assists. It was Showalter’s fifth assist on the season.
Iowa out-shot the Panthers 11-5 and blanked them in corner-kicks, 9-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Kali Feiereisel started the match and made one save. Freshman Emily Moran came in to start the second half and made two saves.
Hyink and freshman Allison Bellmer both had three shots.
Iowa is now a perfect 6-0-0 against Northern Iowa. They return to action this Sunday in a home match against Creighton. Match-time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the UI Soccer Complex.
