COLUMBIA, MO – The University of Iowa soccer team began its four-match road trip on a sour note, falling to the Missouri Tigers, 2-1, Friday in Columbia, MO. The Hawkeyes fall to 4-4 on the season.

Junior midfielder Alexandria Seydel scored the Hawkeyes’ lone goal off a penalty kick in the 64th minute. It was her first goal of the season. Iowa had seven shots in the first half, but Seydel’s shot-on-goal was the only shot the Hawkeyes could muster in the second half.

“We played hard tonight,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “We had some chances, but they didn’t go our way. I think the next few matches will be a lot like this one where the margins of victory will be slim. We just came up a little bit short tonight.”

The Tigers struck first four minutes into the match, when Bree Thornton got a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Kali Feiereisel to make the score 1-0. The score would remain the same until Seydel’s goal, but in the 73rd minute, Michelle Collins put the Tigers ahead for good, scoring a goal of her own to increase the lead to 2-1. The Missouri defense kept the speedy Hawkeye forwards in check all night, not allowing freshman Alyssa Cosnek or sophomore Keli McLaughlin to record a shot-on-goal.

Feiereisel started the match and made three saves, while Moran entered in the second half and made five.

The Hawkeyes will now travel to in-state rival Iowa State for a Sunday afternoon match-up with the Cyclones. Two points in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series will be on the line. The two teams played to a scoreless draw last year in Iowa City.
