Sept. 24, 2008

THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa women’s golf team will head to Columbia, MO, to compete in the Johnnie Imes Invitational hosted by the Missouri Tigers, Sept. 29-30.

THE COMPETITION — Iowa will be competing at Old Hawthorne against Arkansas-Little Rock, Bradley, Drury, Florida International, Kansas, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Missouri State, Ole Miss, Princeton, Redlands CC, Southern Illinois, Texas State, and UMKC.

LINEUP — Hawkeyes traveling to Columbia include seniors Tyrette Metzendorf and Becky Quinby, junior Alison Cavanaugh, sophomore Laura Cilek, and freshman Chelsea Harris. The lineup is the same as those who participated in the Mary Fossum Invitational a week ago.

LAST COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes competed in the annual Mary Fossum Invitational last week, finishing in eighth place. The team combined for a total of 939 in its season-opener. Senior Tyrette Metzendorf led the Hawkeyes by finishing +7 (223), tied for eighth place. Two other golfers cracked the top 50, Becky Quinby (+19, 235) and Alison Cavanaugh (+23, 239) finished tied for 36 and 48, respectively.

HAWKEYE COACH — Kelly Crawford is in her third year as Iowa’s head coach for the women’s golf team. Crawford joined the Hawkeyes after serving as the first head women’s golf in intercollegiate athletics history at the University of California-Irvine (UCI).

QUOTING HEAD COACH Kelly Crawford — “I’m staying optimistic about our standing at this tournament. We’d really like to be in the 300 or lower range for our scores. Last week, putting is what really hurt us in the end, but we have been working on putting a lot in practice this week, I believe we can look to have better scores for this tournament.”

NEXT COMPETITION — Next up for the Hawkeyes is their home tournament, Oct. 4-5. Iowa will host the 15-team Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine in Iowa City.
