EAST LANSING, MI – The University of Iowa soccer team closed out its four-match road trip Sunday on a sour note, losing 4-0 to Michigan State in East Lansing. The Hawkeyes are now 5-5-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in Big Ten play.
Michigan State freshman Laura Heyboer came into Sunday’s match leading the Big Ten in goals with ten and added two more against the Hawkeyes. The Spartan offense also saw goals from Cara Freeman and Mikki Dennis.
“We responded after giving up the early goal, but couldn’t get any chances,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “Credit goes to Michigan State. They finished well and made us pay for our mistakes in the back third. It will give us something to work on this week in practice.”
Iowa had nine shots in the match, but could not get anything going against Michigan State goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege and the rest of the Spartan defense. Senior Kelsey Shaw and sophomore Keli McLaughlin both had two shots for the Hawkeyes. Sophomore forward Amanda Martin had the Hawkeyes’ lone shot-on-goal.
With the halfway point of the season passed, the Hawkeyes will look to regroup with seven of their last nine matches to be at the UI Soccer Complex. Iowa is 3-1 at home this season, with wins against Drake, Western Illinois and Creighton.
“The home crowds have been huge for us and we hope to get a lot of people out this weekend,” said Rainey. “We need them to generate some excitement as we continue in Big Ten play.”
Next weekend, Iowa hosts Indiana and finish up their non-conference slate with a match against North Dakota State.
