Ferentz Live

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Getting over the hump. How does a team do it?

You can bet the farm that this is one of the questions Kirk Ferentz will be asked today when he greets the media for his weekly visit.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are preparing for a trip to Bloomington, Ind., Saturday for an 11 a.m. (Iowa time) date with the Indiana Hoosiers. Ferentz’s squad will carry a 3-3 record into that contest, a mark that could easily be 6-0 or 5-1 or 4-2…if they Hawkeyes had successfully scaled the hump.

Experience gets you over the hump. A good bounce gets you over the hump. Strong leadership gets you over the hump. A guy making a play gets you over the hump.

Ferentz was pretty straightforward after last Saturday’s 16-13 loss at Michigan State. He said the Hawkeyes need to win not only the battle of statistics – which they are doing on a regular basis – but they need to win the battle of the scoreboard – the category that they are falling short on and, as he’s noted previously, the only category that really matters.

In short, they need to figure out a way to get over the hump.

Iowa will have its handful on Saturday. They entering a den filled with angry Hoosiers. After starting the season with a pair of victories, IU has lost three games in a row. They need a win as badly as Iowa.

The obvious question is “Who wants the win more?”

Iowa and Indiana will kick off shortly after 11 a.m. in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday. The game will be televised live by the Big Ten Network. Iowa’s game on Oct. 18 against Wisconsin at historic Kinnick Stadium will also start at 11 a.m. and will also be televised live by BTN.
