Women's Golf to Compete at Lady Northern

THIS WEEK — On Saturday, the Hawkeyes will tee off at Purdue University’s Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, IN. The Lady Northern Invitational is a 14-team tournament that also serves as a preview for the Big Ten Tournament that will be hosted by Purdue on the same course in April. The Kampen Course is a par 72 and plays 6,276 yards. The course hosted the 2008 Men’s Golf NCAA Championships this past May.

THE COMPETITION — Iowa State, Toledo and Notre Dame are the only non-Big Ten conference teams competing this weekend. Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Minnesota, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin and Ohio State will be joining Iowa on the links this weekend.

LINEUP — Competing for Iowa this weekend will be seniors Tyrette Metzendorf and Becky Quinby. Sophomore Laura Cilek will also be traveling to West Lafayette to compete. The remaining three traveling spots have yet to be determined.

LADY NORTHERN HISTORY — Last year, the Hawkeyes tied for ninth place with Illinois at the Lady Northern Invitational. Both teams shot 929 over 54 holes. Kent State, the 2007 Lady Northern Champions, finished with a team score of 878. Penn State was the host of the 2007 tournament. In the 2006 fall season, Iowa finished in sixth place.

LAST COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes had a week off of competition after their last tournament, the Hawkeye Invitational. The tournament was hosted by Iowa and featured 15 teams. Iowa took second place and Tyrette Metzendorf finished third individually.

NEXT COMPETITION — When the golfers return from West Lafayette they will begin to prepare for their final competition of the 2008 fall season. Iowa will travel to Austin, TX, to compete in the 2008 Challenge at Wolfdancer. The tournament will take place Nov. 2-3.
