Iowa Completes Day One At Annual Big Ten Singles Championship

MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team completed the first day of competition Friday at the Big Ten Singles Championship. Two Hawkeyes competed in the qualifying draw on the first day. Both won their first round matches to advance to the main draw.

Freshman Mat Nelson defeated Matt Manasse of Purdue, 6-4, 6-0, to advance. He will face Michael Dierberger of Wisconsin in the main draw.

In addition, junior Walker Grimes defeated Michael Koval of host school Wisconsin, 6-4, 7-6 (4). He will battle Sebastian Gallego in the first round of the main draw.

Competition continues Saturday at the Big Ten Singles Championship. Play in the main draw will begin at 8 a.m. (CT). Iowa will have nine individuals competing in the main draw.
