Jan. 10, 2009

IOWA CITY, IA — The University of Iowa men’s track team opened the 2009 indoor season with 92-77 win over Big Ten rival Illinois Saturday at the UI Recreation Building in Iowa City. Iowa crowned 10 event champions and posted 21 collegiate bests at the meet.

Sophomores Josh Bean and Zeke Sayon were event winners with collegiate-best performances that broke into the Hawkeye record books. Bean’s winning triple jump mark of 48-6 ranks fourth on Iowa’s all-time best performers list, and Sayon’s winning 60 meters time of 6.86 ranks sixth in school history.

Freshman D’Juan Richardson had a strong collegiate debut winning two events. The Indianapolis, IN, native won the 60-meter hurdles (8.33) and 200 meters (21.95) with collegiate-best times. The hurdles time also ranks ninth in school history. Also winning events for Iowa were seniors John Hickey (shot put) and Eric MacTaggart (3,000 meters), juniors Adam Hairston (800 meters), Jesse Luciano (mile) and Alex Zona (pole vault), and sophomore Graham Valdes (high jump).

“It was fun to get back to the concept of a dual scoring meet for two Big Ten teams,” said Iowa Head Men’s Coach Larry Wieczorek. “This is the earliest we’ve started competition in a long time, and to get the performances that we did makes me very excited and optimistic about the type of season we could have.”

Iowa’s next competition will be Jan. 17 when it hosts the Iowa Open at the Recreation Building. Competing teams at the co-ed meet are Iowa, Central Methodist, Truman State, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Western Illinois. Events are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and admission to the event is free.
