Kirk Ferentz for president?

Feb. 4, 2009

IOWA CITY, Iowa — It’s not that University of Iowa football recruit Shane DiBona is carrying the entire state of Massachusetts on his 6-foot-2, 225-pound frame, but at times it might seem that way. The tiny New England state rarely produces players who travel outside the region to play for elite football programs.

DiBona, for one, has broken that mold.

In the Feb. 4 edition of The Boston Globe, DiBona is featured under the headline, “A big-time state representative.” The political references don’t stop there. After spending a weekend observing the UI program and meeting the coaching staff, DiBona’s head coach, Dave Maimaron, had this to say about Hawkeye head man Kirk Ferentz:

“I came away thinking I had never met an individual that exudes leadership more in my life,” Maimaron said. “I literally came out of there saying, ‘This guy should be president of the United States.’ You’re worried about sending a kid somewhere. You have no doubt that he’s going to be taught the right things.”
