Iowa beat Indiana tonight, 69-67, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, IA. Iowa improves to 39-15 all-time against the Hoosiers. The Hawkeyes also improved to 22-3 against Indiana in Iowa City, including winning the last 12.
Indiana (8-4) is now only one-half game ahead of the Iowa (7-4) in the Big Ten standings.
Iowa almost made as many free throws as it did field goals tonight. The Hawkeyes made 22 field goals and 21 free throws. The Hawkeyes shot 81 percent (21-26) from the foul line, including 16-20 (.800) in the second half and 44 percent (22-50) from the field. The Hawkeyes shot a blistering 57 percent (12-21) from the floor the final 20 minutes.
Wendy Ausdemore poured in a team-high 20 points, bolstered by a career-high 11-12 (.917) shooting performance from the charity stripe. Ausdemore has now topped the 20-point plateau five times this season. The senior also pulled down seven rebounds.
Kachine Alexander, who recorded a triple-double in Iowa last game, totaled nine points, eight rebounds and three assists. The sophomore fouled out of the game at the 2:58 mark of the second half.
Kristi Smith, Iowa’s second-leading scorer, contributed 17 points tonight.
Freshman Kamille Wahlin started her fourth-straight game for the injured JoAnn Hamlin. Wahlin collected 10 points, five assists and tied a season high with seven boards.
Indiana was paced by Jamie Braun, scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the second stanza. She also corralled eight rebounds.
Indiana dominated Iowa on the glass tonight, 49-37. The Hoosiers collected 29 offensive rebounds, but the Black and Gold only allowed 15 second-chance points.
Iowa returns to action Sunday afternoon when the Hawkeyes travel to Minneapolis, MN, to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. inside Williams Arena.
