Kristi Smith Competes at 3-Point Shootout

April 2, 2009

AUBURN HILLS, MI – University of Iowa senior Kristi Smith was one of eight women and men participants to compete in ESPNs College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships held at The Palace, home of the NBAs Detroit Pistons.

Smith finished the first round with 13 points. Her 13 points placed her sixth, which was not enough to advance her to the semifinals. Furman’s Melissa Liebschwager took the crown, scoring 19 points in the finals to beat out Briann January of Arizona State, who tallied 14 points.

Miami’s Jack McClinton won the men’s title, collecting 22 points in the final round. Hometown favorite Erik Kangas from Oakland University was the runner-up.

“It was fun to practice for this event this past week and get an opportunity to represent the University of Iowa. I was a couple points from advancing, which was disappointing, but I had a great time in Detroit.”
