IOWA CITY, Iowa — Those who provide a good chunk of the energy, excitement and color at home and select away events of University of Iowa athletics teams – the Iowa Spirit Squads – now have a home on the world wide web.
Fans, friends, peers and alumni of the Iowa Cheerleading, Iowa Dance Team, and Herky and Herky Security – collectively known as the Iowa Spirit Squads – can now keep up to speed on the activities of the current members of the teams and connect with alumni by visiting the Spirit Squads section of hawkeyesports.com, the official world wide web site of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
To go there, click HERE. The link “Spirit Squads” is included in the drop-down menu “UI ATHLETICS” located to the immediate right of “SPORTS” near the top of each page of hawkeyesports.com.
“I am very excited for our current squad members and alumni. This presence will help us continue to build tradition among our squads while providing useful information to friends of the UI and fans of the Hawkeyes,” said Gregg Niemec, the coordinator of the UI’s spirit squads and the head cheerleading coach.
Niemec also said the site will also have a significant impact on the coaching staff’s recruiting efforts and Iowa Spirit Squads’ commitment to outreach. In fact, Niemec believes oe of the most useful tools now available is an online form for appearance requests. This tool will help streamline the process undertaken when a group is interested in having Herky, the Iowa Cheerleaders and/or the Iowa Dance Team make a public appearance.

Information about each team, the coaching staff, annual events, and a current year team roster is also available. The site also offers an area that is being built exclusively with alumni of the program in mind. News items related to the teams will also be posted at this location.
Over the summer, photo galleries will be built and additional editorial content and photography will be added.
