Farley Moves On At NCAA Championships

June 11, 2009

FAYETTEVILLE, AR — Hawkeye sophomore Karessa Farley advanced to Friday’s 100-meter semifinals at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Fayetteville, AR, Thursday evening, while four other Hawkeyes saw their outdoor seasons come to an end.

Farley, who placed 18th in the women’s 100-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 13.65, will run in the semifinals Friday at 6:55 p.m. (CT). Iowa’s other remaining qualifier – senior Renee White – will compete in the first round of the women’s triple jump Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. Fans can follow meet results live at www.arkansasrazorbacks.com. Parts of Friday’s events will be televised at 6 p.m. (CT) on CBS College Sports.

Hawkeye senior John Hickey, juniors Ray Varner and Adam Hairston and freshman Betsy Flood all ended their 2009 outdoor seasons Thursday night. Hickey placed 11th in the men’s shot put finals with a throw of 57-11 3/4 in his final collegiate meet. A two-time all-American, Hickey won two Big Ten shot put titles and set the school indoor record (63-0) in that event. Hairston placed 16th in the men’s 800-meter semifinals in 1:49.12, while Varner placed 18th in the men’s 400-meter hurdles semifinals in 53.03. Flood ran a collegiate-best 4:24.11 in the women’s 1,500-meter prelims for 23rd place.

“Both Ray and Adam did a good job advancing to the semifinal round in their events,” said Head Men’s Coach Larry Wieczorek. “They are both underclassmen, so they have a chance to build on these performances and earn a trip back to the NCAA meet next year. John has also done a lot of good things during his Hawkeye career.”
