IOWA CITY – University of Iowa incoming freshman Morgan Johnson was recently honored by the Kansas City Royals after being named the Kansas City Star Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Johnson, a native of Platte City, MO, threw out the first pitch before the Royals took on the Minnesota Twins June 30.
Johnson excelled both on and off the court at Platte County High School. Athletically, she was named Miss Show-Me Basketball, an award given annually to the top player in the state of Missouri. She was also awarded the DieRenna Ward, which is given to the best prep player in the Kansas City area, along with the Missouri High School Coaches Association Female Athlete of the Year Award.
Academically, Johnson maintained a 4.0 grade-point average, and was name a class valedictorian. She was a two-time academic all-state selection. Johnson also belonged to numerous organizations during her high school career, including the Science Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Character Council, and was also a volunteer for the Special Olympics.
