Iowa No. 21 in USA Today's Preseason Top 25

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The 2009 University of Iowa football team will open its season ranked among the nation’s elite, having earned a position in the first USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 poll of the new season.

The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 21 with 257 points. The are bookended by North Carolina at No. 20 and Nebraska at No. 22. Iowa is one of three Big Ten Conference teams included in the list. Ohio State is ranked sixth and Penn State eighth.

Iowa opens its 2009 season against Northern Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 5. That game is scheduled to kickoff shortly after 11 a.m. Iowa time inside historic Kinnick Stadium and will be televised live in high definition by the Big Ten Network.

The season opener is the first of seven home games for the Hawkeyes, who completed last year’s season ranked No. 20 in the USA Today poll after blitzing South Carolina in the 2009 Outback Bowl. Iowa also entertains Arizona and Arkansas State in non-conference action, and Big Ten rivals Michigan, Northwestern, Indiana, and Minnesota.
