IOWA CITY – University of Iowa Head Women’s Basketball Coach Lisa Bluder announced today that former Hawkeye co-captain Abby Emmert has been named the team’s new Director of Basketball Operations.
Emmert, a native of Winterset, IA, was a member of the women’s basketball team from 2005-08. She was named a team co-captain in 2008, and helped lead the Hawkeyes to a Big Ten regular season co-championship. Emmert also received the Dr. Christine Grant Leadership Award for women’s basketball as a senior.
“We are thrilled to have Abby rejoin our Iowa women’s basketball family, this time in a different role,” Bluder said. “Abby’s experience as a co-captain for the 2008 Big Ten championship team will be a great benefit as our new Director of Basketball Operations. Her understanding of our program and our philosophy will make this an easy adjustment, and her loyalty as a Hawkeye is immense.”
Emmert played in 123 career games as a Hawkeye, including 22 starts. She scored 299 career points, collected 144 rebounds and dished out 177 assists. She scored a career-high 17 points against Iowa State as a junior in 2006.
“I couldn’t be more excited to be joining the Iowa women’s basketball program as the director of operations,” Emmert said. “I enjoyed my time as a student-athlete at Iowa, and look forward to again being a part of the Hawkeye family. I would like to thank Coach Bluder, the women’s basketball staff and the University for this great opportunity.”
Emmert graduated with a communications studies degree from the University of Iowa in 2008, and worked for the United Way of East Central Iowa before taking over as Director of Basketball Operations.
