Sept. 7, 2009

IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa senior Christina Meister has been named volleyball Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week following her performance at last weekend’s Country Inn and Suites Classic in Green Bay, WI.

Meister, a libero from West Des Moines, IA, totaled 75 digs in Iowa’s three-game sweep, including a school-record tying 36 digs vs. Central Michigan. Meister’s efforts helped the Hawkeyes capture the tournament championship and start the season 6-0 for the first time in 21 years. She currently leads the Big Ten with an average of 5.19 digs per set.

Meister added two service aces and an assist while capturing her first Big Ten weekly award. Meister is the first Hawkeye to earn a Big Ten weekly volleyball honor since 2006 when her sister, Melanie Meister, took home the award on offense.
