Betsy Flood Earns Big Ten Weekly Honors

Sept. 8, 2009

University of Iowa sophomore Betsy Flood was one of three student-athletes named Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week. This is Flood’s first weekly honor, with the last Hawkeye to earn this honor being Racheal Marchand on October 7, 2008.

The Des Moines, IA, native won the 3,000 meters in Iowa’s opening meet this past weekend with a collegiate-best finish of 10:20.25. This time places her third all-time at Iowa in the event. It was a very productive weekend overall, with the top-three finishing athletes, Flood, junior Amanda Hardesty (2nd, 10:21.51), and sophomore Brooke Eilers (3rd, 10:24.51), earning the third, fourth, and fifth spots on the all-time list at Iowa, respectively.

Flood shares the weekly laurel with Michigan junior Danielle Tauro and Penn State sophomore Caitlin Lee. The Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week was Alex Russeau, a junior at Michigan State.

In three weeks, The University of Iowa cross country squads will head north to the University of Minnesota for the Griak Invitational September 26. Events will be held at Les Bolstad Golf Course and are slated to start at 12:55 p.m.
