EAST LANSING, MI — The University of Iowa women’s golf team finished day two of the Mary Fossum Invitational in 15th place out of 17 teams after firing a 964. In three rounds of play, Michigan State won the tournament shooting an 875 (+11).
Junior Brianna Coopman (+22, 238) led the Hawkeyes after firing a team low 80 in the third round. She also began recorded an 80 in her second round after posting a 78 in the opening round. Junior Laura Cilek and freshman Kristi Cardwell each shot a 242 (+26). Cilek had a low of 78 in the second round after opening with an 80 in the first round. Cardwell recorded a low of 80 in both rounds one and three. Senior Alison Cavanaugh (+28, 244) shot an 81 in Sunday’s third round after opening the tournament with a 79 on her first 18 holes.Freshman Gigi DiGrazia rounded out the team scoring by shooting a 253 (+37) in her first collegiate tournament.
“Obviously I am disappointed with our performance this week,” Head Coach Kelly Crawford said. “I totally believed that this team would finish in the top third of the field…..at worst, the top half. We certainly had our challenges out there. Everybody on the team had a good run of holes at some point throughout the tournament and we will focus on that. We will work on hitting more greens and converting our up & downs over the next couple of weeks.”
Iowa will return to action at the Lady Northern Invitational on September 27-28th in Madison, WI.
