Lady Northern Invite Delayed During Second Round

Sept. 27, 2009

MADISON, WI — The University of Iowa women’s golf team competed in the Lady Northern Invitational today, hosted by Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes fired a 314 in the first 18 holes but due to inclement weather, only got through the first four holes in the second round before the tournament was delayed. Iowa is tied for 12th place and the tournament will resume tomorrow to finish up the remainder of the second round and third. Ohio State is leading the tournament with a 283.

Freshman Kristi Cardwell led the team in the first complete round firing a 76 (+4). Junior Laura Cilek wasn’t far behind shooting a 77 (+5). In their first tournaments of the year, junior Lauren Forbes shot an 80 (+8) while sophomore Chelsea Harris scored an 81 (+9). Junior Brianna Coopman recorded an 82 (+10) and senior Alison Cavanaugh shot an 85 (+13). “The conditions were a bit challenging today,” Head Coach Kelly Crawford said. “25-35 mile an hour winds followed by rain and thunderstorms which eventually cut our second round short. Winds and rain aside, we still missed a lot of short putts. We also got off to a bad start and gave back 10 shots in our first three holes. We have to do a better job out of the gate tomorrow. We are playing much better in the second round and just need to hang on and finish strong. I was really proud of how Kristi finished her first round with three birdies in a row and nearly a 4th on her last 4 holes.”

The tournament will conclude Monday at 7:30 p.m. with the completion of the second round. The third round will commence with a shotgun start at approximately 9:30 a.m. CDT. The same pairings as used in the previous two rounds will be used for the third round.
