IOWA CITY – Consensus all-American quarterback and College Football Hall of Famer Chuck Long has been named honorary captain for Saturday’s homecoming game against Michigan. The Hawkeyes face the Wolverines in a nationally televised ABC game with kickoff set for 7:12 p.m. in Kinnick Stadium. The game has been sold out for months. Iowa has sold out 38 of its last 40 home games.
Long, a native of Wheaton, IL, finished second in the 1985 Heisman Trophy balloting. It was the closest vote in Heisman history. He did win the 1985 Maxwell Award as college football’s top player and the Davey O’Brien Award as the top quarterback. Following the 1985 season he was named the Big Ten’s Athlete of the Year, Big Ten Football Player of the Year and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Long was a three-time first-team all-Big Ten selection. He was named to virtually every first all-America team following Iowa’s Big Ten championship run in 1985. The Hawkeyes played in the Rose Bowl following that season. He is believed to be the only player in NCAA history to play in five bowl games (Rose twice, Peach, Gator, Freedom).
Long is still Iowa’s career passing and total offense leader. He passed for 10,461 yards and 74 touchdowns (1981-85).
Long was most recently head coach at San Diego State University. He also served as an assistant coach at Iowa and Oklahoma.
Long will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for the pre-game coin-flip. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game and on the sidelines during the contest.
