Penn State Downs Iowa

Oct. 11, 2009

The University of Iowa soccer team faced a tough Big Ten opponent Sunday in its fourth conference game of the season. Penn State defeated Iowa, 4-0.

“I think our team feels like we had a lot of good possessions against a good team, but of course, we are a little disappointed we couldn’t finish more of our opportunities,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “Penn State is a very good attacking team, and we have to tip our hats to them as well because they played well.”

Penn State got on the board first in the 26th minute with an Iowa own goal.

Iowa’s attack was in motion, combining for 16 shots. The Hawkeyes were led by Morgan Showalter with seven shots, three on goal, and outshot the Nittany Lions 16-12.

In the 31st minute, Penn State capitalized on a chance from the 18-yard box. Christine Nairn found the net just outside of Iowa goalkeeper Emily Moran’s hands.

A penalty kick conversion in the 46th minute, and a netted ball by Danielle Toney in the 72nd minute sealed the win for the Nittany Lions.

Moran made three saves in goal, pushing her past Lindsey Boldt for fourth place career saves with 132.

Iowa returns to Iowa City for match ups with Illinois (Oct. 17) and Northwestern (Oct. 22).
