EAST LANSING, MI – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team completed the second day of competition Saturday at the annual Big Ten Singles Tournament. Singles competition started today on the campus of Michigan State University.
Marc Bruche led the Hawkeyes in the main singles draw. The sophomore defeated Eddie Svenda of Minnesota in the round of 64, 6-3, 7-6 (5). He then defeated Austin Brooks of host school Michigan State, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (3), to advance to the round of 16.
Austen Kauss upset the No. 2 overall seed, Slavko Bijela, in the first round. Kauss defeated Bijela of Purdue, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (5), before falling in the second round.
“The win is clearly the upset of the tournament and is a great win for Austen (Kauss),” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
In the singles back draw, two Hawkeyes, Garret Dunn and Nikita Zotov won their first round matches to advance. Dunn, Zotov, Kauss and Tommy McGeorge will continue competition tomorrow in the back draw. Kauss and McGeorge received first round byes.
The Black and Gold will continue play tomorrow at the Big Ten Singles Tournament. Singles competition will resume at 7 a.m. CT.
