Iowa Completes Day One Short Course Nationals

FEDERAL WAY, WA- The University of Iowa women’s swimming team finished its first day at the ConocoPhillips Short Course National Championship in Federal Way, WA. Iowa sent Danielle Carty, Daniela Cubelic, Verity Hicks, Christine Kuczek, Sarah Galvin and Katarina Tour. After day one of competition the Hawkeyes are in 12th place out of 37 teams with 26 points.

The relay team of Kuczek, Cubelic, Carty and Tour took sixth-place in the 4×50 free relay at finals, moving up one stop from their seventh-place finish at prelims. The girls posted a time of 1:34.20. Hicks swam the 500 free at prelims with a time of 4:57.65, which is a season best for her. She placed 44th out of 65 in the event. Tour posted a time of 2:07.00 in the 200 IM at prelims, placing 81st.

Iowa had three swimmers in prelims of the 50 free. Kuczek was the only swimmer for Iowa to make finals. She placed 20th at finals with a time of 23.46. Cubelic placed 57th (23.94) out of 96 competitors and Carty came in right behind in 58th place (23.96).

The Hawkeyes concluded the first day of competition with the 400 medley relay. The team of Carty, Tour, Cubelic and Kuczek placed 13th with a time of 3:48.02.

The competition continues tomorrow with prelims starting at 11 a.m. central time and finals beginning at 7 p.m. central time.
