Hicks Earns Big Ten Weekly Honor

IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa junior Verity Hicks was tabbed the Big Ten Conference’s Swimmer of the Week for her efforts Dec. 11 at Iowa State. The New Zealand native recorded two first-place finishes against the Hawkeyes’ in-state rival.

Hicks captured Iowa’s first win of the night with a season best time of 1:51.42 in the 200 freestyle. She went on to win the 500 free, posting a time of 4:58.85 before contributing to a second-place finish in the 400 free relay (3:26.62). The honor is Hicks’ first career weekly laurel and Iowa’s first weekly award since Christine Kuczek earned Big Ten honors exactly one year ago, December 16, 2008.

The Hawkeyes return to the water January 6 at the Tampa Relays. Iowa will compete on the campus of the University of Tampa beginning at 2 p.m. (CT).
