WACO, TX – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team lost at No. 6 Baylor in its season opener Sunday, 7-0. The 58th-ranked Hawkeyes, competing in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Tournament at Waco, TX, fall to 0-1 on the season.
The Bears, now 3-0 overall and winners of ten-straight at home, claimed the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Denes Lukacs and Maros Horny defeated former Bear Marc Bruche and Nikita Zotov, 8-5. The duo of Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos, ranked ninth in the central region, fell to Attila Bucko and Sergio Ramirez at the No. 3 position, 8-6. Freshman Garret Dunn, competing in his first dual match, was paired with senior Reinoud Haal at the No. 2 position. Their match was not finished.
The Black and Gold were unable to come away with any singles victories. Bruche, competing in his first dual match as a Hawkeye, fell at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-4. At the No. 6 spot, Austen Kauss saw his first career dual singles action. The Iowa junior lost to Maros Horny, 6-1, 6-4.
The Hawkeyes will face No. 66 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend consolation match. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (CT) at the Baylor Tennis Center.
