Johnson Grabs Big Ten Freshman Of The Week Award

Feb. 1, 2010

IOWA CITY – University of Iowa freshman center Morgan Johnson has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for her efforts against Purdue Sunday. The announcement came Monday from the Big Ten office.

Johnson led Iowa against the Boilermakers with her third career double-double. The Platte City, MO, native netted 16 points and 11 rebounds, and finished 7-8 from the field. She made her first seven shots of the game before missing her final attempt at the 2:10 mark in the second half. Johnson added two blocks in 24 minutes of action.

Johnson’s 11 rebounds pushed her total to 152 on the season, which ties for fourth-best in Iowa history among freshmen.

Monday’s Freshman of the Week honor is the fourth for Iowa this season. Jaime Printy has earned the award three times. Iowa is the only team with four Freshman of the Week award winners (Illinois’ Karisma Penn has won the award three times).

Johnson and the Hawkeyes return to action Thursday when they face nationally-ranked Ohio State at Columbus. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT), and the game can be seen live on the Big Ten Network (HD).
